• Lithium (LiFePO4): the lightest and longest-lasting choice, with the most run time per charge. A lithium trolling motor battery is a strong pick if you're tired of recharging mid-trip or want to drop weight off a smaller hull, and for anglers who keep a boat for years it's often the best trolling motor battery you can buy, higher up-front price and all.

Trolling motor batteries come in three common group sizes, 24, 27, and 31, in rising order of capacity. A larger group number generally means more amp-hours, which usually means more time on the water before you need a charge, and a group 27 deep cycle battery is the middle-of-the-road choice for most small boats. Voltage matters too: trolling motors run on 12, 24, or 36 volts, so some boats need one battery and others need two or three wired together.
