Car Battery Installation, While You Wait

Your car started fine yesterday. This morning it clicked twice and quit. Or the battery is six years old and you would rather deal with it now than in a parking lot in February.

Pull into the garage in Willoughby. On about nine out of ten vehicles we see, we test the system, install the new battery, and have you back on the road in fifteen or twenty minutes. On those vehicles the installation costs you nothing beyond the battery itself.

Free on about nine out of ten vehicles

Simple installations are free with the purchase of a new battery. Simple means the battery is where the factory usually puts it, the hold-down comes off without a fight, and the whole job takes twenty minutes or less. That describes roughly nine out of ten of the vehicles that pull in.

The other one in ten carries an installation charge, because it is genuinely a different job. Those are the batteries buried in the trunk, tucked inside a fender, or sitting somewhere that requires pulling trim, a wheel, or a seat to reach. We will tell you which one you are before we start, not after.

The free installation applies to batteries bought here. If you already have a battery from somewhere else, call us before you drive over.

Where the battery actually lives

Manufacturers stopped putting every battery under the hood a long time ago, and where yours lives changes how long the job takes.

  • Under the hood. The common case and the quick one.
  • In the trunk or under the cargo floor. Frequent on European sedans and a lot of newer domestics.
  • Under the driver or passenger seat. The seat usually has to move to get at it.
  • Inside the fender. The Dodge Journey is the one people are most surprised by. The battery sits behind the front wheel well, and getting to it means the wheel and the liner come out first.

If you are not sure where yours is, tell us the year, make, and model when you call and we will know before you arrive.

What happens while you wait

Automotive installations are walk-in. No appointment, no service writer, no waiting on a bay to open up.

  1. We test before we sell. A battery that reads 12.7 volts at rest can still collapse under load, and a bad alternator will kill a new battery just as fast as it killed the old one. We would rather find that now.
  2. We put a memory saver on it. Every vehicle installation gets one, so the computer never loses power. Your radio presets, seat positions, and stored settings are still there when you drive away.
  3. We install the new battery and clean up the terminals and hold-down while we are in there.
  4. We take the old battery as the core, which is required with the purchase of a new one.

Most people are in and out in fifteen or twenty minutes. There is a lobby with chairs if you would rather sit than stand over the fender watching.

Battery registration on newer vehicles

A lot of newer vehicles, European ones especially, will not simply accept a new battery. The charging system keeps a running estimate of how worn the battery is and adjusts its charging profile to match. Drop a new battery in without telling the car about it, and the alternator keeps charging as though the old, tired battery were still in there.

The result is a new battery that gets charged wrong from day one and dies early. We register the new battery so the vehicle starts over with a correct profile. This mostly comes up on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen.

Commercial vehicles and equipment

We install batteries in commercial vehicles and equipment as well as cars. Call ahead on these so we can make sure the right tech is on the floor and the equipment we need is prepped before you arrive.

  • Dump trailers
  • Dump trucks
  • Semis
  • Golf carts
  • Electric UTV equipment
  • Skyjacks and similar lifts

Commercial installations carry an installation charge, with two exceptions: dump trailers and dump trucks are handled the same way automotive work is.

We do travel for some of this. On smaller jobs we stay inside roughly ten miles of the shop. For larger jobs it depends on what else we have running that week, so call with the equipment and the location and we will give you a straight answer.

What we do not install

We do not install hybrid or EV traction packs, the lithium and nickel-metal hydride packs that actually move the vehicle. Dedicated electric vehicles we send to the dealer rather than guess at it.

That is a deliberate line we put in place for the protection of our staff. Traction packs run at voltages that will kill you, they need manufacturer tooling and procedures, and the honest answer is that the dealer is the right place for that work.

Pull into the shop in Willoughby

Everything happens at our shop in Willoughby, where we have been at the same address for 35 years. You pull in, we do the work, you leave.

People come in from Wickliffe, Eastlake, and Willowick on a lunch break, down from Mentor and Kirtland, and over from Euclid, Richmond Heights, and Mayfield Heights. Northeast Ohio winters are hard on batteries, and February is when most people find out how old theirs was.

While you are here, we can also test the charging system, or build you a custom battery cable if the old one is corroded. If you cannot get the vehicle here at all, look at roadside installation.

Common questions

Do you install car batteries for free?

Yes, on about nine out of ten vehicles, when you buy the battery from us. Simple installations that take twenty minutes or less are free. Batteries in the trunk, inside a fender, or in another hard-to-reach spot carry an installation charge, and we tell you which one you are before we start.

Do I need an appointment?

Not for a car, truck, or SUV. Automotive installation is walk-in. For commercial vehicles and equipment, call ahead so we can have the right tech on staff and the equipment prepped.

How long does it take?

Fifteen to twenty minutes for a typical vehicle, and it is genuinely while-you-wait. There is a lobby with chairs. Harder installations take longer, and we will tell you roughly how much longer before we begin.

How much does car battery installation cost?

Nothing on most vehicles, as long as the battery came from us. The harder installations carry a charge that depends on the vehicle and what has to come apart to reach the battery. Call with your year, make, and model and we will tell you before you drive over.

Can I install a car battery myself?

On plenty of vehicles, yes, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Two things make it worth having done: a memory saver so the computer does not lose its settings, and battery registration on vehicles that require it. Without those you can end up with a car that has forgotten everything, or a new battery that gets charged wrong and dies early.

Do you have to reset anything on a newer car?

On many newer vehicles, yes. The charging system tracks how worn the battery is, so a new battery has to be registered or the alternator keeps charging as though the old one were still in there. That shortens the life of the new battery. It comes up most often on BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen, and we handle it.

Do you take my old battery?

Yes, and we need it. The old battery is required as the core when you buy a new one, so bring it in with the vehicle or hand it over at the counter.

Do you install batteries in commercial equipment?

Yes. Dump trailers, dump trucks, semis, golf carts, electric UTV equipment, and skyjacks and similar lifts. Call ahead so we can prep. We travel for some of it, generally within about ten miles for smaller jobs.
