You don't need to know. We read it off the old one.

If you're curious anyway, most quartz watches run on one of a handful of watch battery sizes: 377, 371, 364, SR626SW, SR920SW. The number is printed on the cell itself, and the same cell shows up under two or three different part numbers depending on who made it. A 377 and an SR626SW are the same battery wearing different name tags.

The watches we turn down

Two kinds, and we'd rather tell you here than after you've made the drive.

Dive watches, and anything sealed for real depth. Look at the back of the case. If it's marked for diving or rated past 50 feet, opening it is the easy part and closing it correctly is the problem. Cases like that have to be resealed and pressure-tested in a chamber before anyone can say the seal actually held, and we don't have that equipment on the floor. A watchmaker or a jeweler who does water-resistance testing is the right stop. Send it there and it comes back sealed, instead of hoping.

Smartwatches. Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Garmin, and everything like them run on a sealed lithium pack glued into the case, not a coin cell anyone can swap across a counter. Apple Watch battery replacement goes through Apple or an authorized repair shop.

One more thing worth saying plainly. We install the battery, and that's where we stop. We don't replace case gaskets or seals. If yours has dried out and you want the watch back to being water-resistant, that's watchmaker work and we'll say so.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a watch battery?

It depends on the cell and on how the case opens. A snap-back with a common size sits at the low end, a screw-back with an oddball cell at the high end. Call 440-942-2555 with the brand and we'll tell you before you make the trip.

How long does a watch battery last?

Two to five years for most quartz watches. A plain three-hand watch sits at the long end of that. Anything with a backlight, an alarm, or a chronograph you actually use pulls harder and lands at the short end. A watch that dies inside a year usually has a movement problem, not a battery problem.

Can I replace my watch battery myself?

On a snap-back case with a proper case knife, yes, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. The trouble starts with screw-backs, press-fit crystals, and the little contact spring that bends if you look at it wrong. If the watch matters to you, five minutes at our counter is cheaper than a scratched caseback.

Do you replace Apple Watch batteries?

No. Smartwatch batteries are sealed lithium packs adhered into the case, which is a different job with different tools and a different failure mode if it goes wrong. Apple and authorized repair shops handle those.

Can you change the battery in my dive watch?

No, and it's the one we turn down most often. A watch sealed against real depth needs a pressure chamber to reseal and verify, and we don't have one. Take it to a watchmaker or a jeweler who does water-resistance testing so it comes back sealed properly rather than sealed probably.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Watch batteries are a walk-in counter job. Bring up to three and wait for them; bring more than three and we'll call you when they're done.

The watch has a new battery and still won't run. What now?

Then it's the movement and not the power. A quartz movement can seize, a coil can go open, and contacts corrode after an old cell has leaked. We'll tell you that's what we're looking at rather than sell you a second battery and send you home with the same dead watch.
