What we test

If it is a lead-acid battery and it is not in a steel case, we can test it. That covers most of what rolls through the door:

  • Automotive and light truck starting batteries, any group size.
  • Motorcycle, ATV, UTV, and snowmobile batteries, including sealed AGM.
  • Mobility and scooter batteries, sealed lead acid and gel, U1 through GC2.
  • Marine starting and deep cycle, single batteries or a full house bank.
  • Lawn, garden, and generator batteries.
  • Commercial deep cycle out of floor scrubbers, sweepers, aerial lifts, and golf cars.
  • Sealed lead acid standby from UPS cabinets, alarm panels, and emergency lighting.

Lithium depends on the format. A LiFePO4 battery built as a starting or deep cycle replacement, the kind that goes in a boat, an RV, or a floor scrubber, tests fine on our equipment. The BMS in those packs is designed to hold a constant load under stress, and that is exactly what we ask it to do. Small lithium packs are a different animal, and we cover those below.

Why we load test instead of plugging in a handheld

Most counters now use a digital conductance tester. It is fast, it is cheap, and it guesses. The tester sends a small signal through the battery, measures internal resistance, and works backward to an estimated cranking number. It never asks the battery to do the job it was built for.

We use carbon pile load testers, which put a real electrical load across the terminals and watch what happens. A battery can sit there reading 12.6 volts at rest and drop to 9 volts the second you pull 300 amps out of it. Resting voltage tells you a battery is charged. Only a load tells you it is strong.

That is why people end up here after a parts store told them their battery was fine. The handheld saw a charged battery. The load test sees a battery that quits.

How a battery test actually goes

  1. We read the resting voltage and look the battery over: case, terminals, date code, corrosion, any swelling or seepage.
  2. If it is low, we charge it first. Load testing a discharged battery gives you a failure every time, whether the battery is bad or not. This is the step most places skip.
  3. We apply a real load with the carbon pile, roughly half the battery's rated cranking amps, and hold it while we watch the voltage.
  4. We watch the recovery. How fast the battery comes back after the load is released says as much about its state of health as the number under load did.
  5. We tell you what we found and why. If it passed, you will know what to look at next. If it failed, you will know which part of the test it failed and what that means for the equipment it came out of.

A battery that is already charged takes a few minutes. That is the whole visit.

Leave it overnight and we will charge it first

Some batteries come in too far down to give an honest answer the same day. Leave it with us. We put it on the right charger for its chemistry, bring it up properly, and load test it once it is actually full.

You will have an answer in 24 to 48 hours, depending on how far down the battery was. Deep discharge takes longer because a slow, controlled charge is the only kind that helps. We carry a full line of specialty chargers for this, which is why an AGM scooter battery, a flooded golf car set, and a gel UPS block do not all get treated the same.

Whether a deeply discharged battery can be brought back is mostly a question of age. A battery left sitting at a low state of charge sulfates, and past a point those lead sulfate crystals stop dissolving back into the electrolyte no matter what you do. Inside about two years of the manufacture date we have a real shot at a recovery charge. Older than that, the odds fall off fast, and we will say so rather than keep your battery on a shelf for three days to reach the same conclusion.

We check the alternator too

Plenty of the batteries people bring in are not the actual problem. An alternator that undercharges will flatten a good battery over a season, and the battery takes the blame for it. One that overcharges cooks the plates and does the damage faster.

So we do not stop at the battery. Drive the vehicle in and we will test the alternator output right in the car, because putting a new battery on a charging system that is not keeping up just means you will be back here in eight months. Thirty-five years at one counter in Willoughby is mostly thirty-five years of watching what actually killed the battery, and it is not always the battery.

We do not have the equipment to chase a parasitic drain. If the battery tests good and the alternator tests good and the thing still goes dead sitting in the driveway, you have a draw somewhere, and that is a job for a shop with the diagnostic gear to hunt it down.

What we cannot test

Two things, and we would rather tell you now than after you have loaded them in the truck.

Steel case industrial batteries. The traction batteries out of forklifts and similar industrial equipment are outside what we are set up for. Those need a service company with the lifting equipment and cell-level test gear that job requires, and we will point you toward one.

Small lithium packs. E-scooter batteries, hoverboard packs, power tool batteries, and similar small lithium assemblies cannot be evaluated with a carbon pile. The protection circuit shuts the pack down before the test tells you anything useful. Those go through our battery pack rebuild service instead, where we open the pack and test at the cell level.

One more thing worth saying out loud: we will test a battery you bought somewhere else, any brand, same test and same straight answer. What we cannot do is process another retailer's warranty claim. You will need to take it back to whoever sold it to you. Plenty of people walk in here first because they want to know whether the claim is worth making before they spend the afternoon making it.
