The Deka 8G8D is a Group 8D battery built for equipment that has to crank a big engine and then run loads long after that engine is off. It is a 12-volt, 225 amp-hour gel cell rated at 1150 cold cranking amps, which makes it a true dual-purpose 8D battery: enough starting power for a diesel, enough depth for house and control loads, and no maintenance in between.
Gel means the acid is held in a thick silica gel instead of sitting in the case as liquid. Nothing to top off, nothing to spill, and the battery can be mounted on its side or tucked into a tight compartment without leaking (upside down is the one position to avoid). Gel also takes vibration better than a standard flooded battery and loses less than 2% of its charge per month sitting at room temperature, so a generator or a boat that sits for weeks comes back ready.
Before You Buy: Charging a Gel Battery
Gel cells want a gel or gel-compatible charging profile. A charger or alternator set up for flooded batteries runs a higher voltage than a gel cell wants and will dry it out over time. If your charger has a gel setting, you are set. If you are not sure what your equipment puts out, call us with the model and we will work through it with you. We would rather check twice than sell you a battery your charger is going to ruin.
Group 8D Fit and Applications
Standard BCI Group 8D case with SAE posts, so it drops into an existing 8D tray. Common jobs for this one:
- Standby and portable generators
- Marine starting and house banks
- Class 8 trucks and heavy equipment
- Industrial and commercial control equipment
- Solar and off-grid storage banks
- Emergency power and communications gear
An 8D is a lot of battery. This one measures 20-3/4 by 11 by 10 inches and weighs 158 pounds, so plan on a second set of hands and a battery strap for the install. We hand these across the counter for standby generators, service trucks, and boats running out of Mentor and Fairport Harbor, where something that sits for weeks still has to start big.
