The Crown MAR-800 is a 12-volt marine starting battery built to do one job well: turn the engine over, then take a charge back from the alternator. It delivers 810 marine cranking amps and 650 cold cranking amps, which is enough current for most mid-size outboards, sterndrives, and inboards running out of the Lake Erie ports.
Two numbers matter on a starting battery. Marine cranking amps (MCA) are measured at 32°F and tell you how the battery behaves at normal launch temperatures. Cold cranking amps (CCA) are measured at 0°F and tell you what's left after a boat has sat through an Ohio spring. At 810 MCA and 650 CCA, the MAR-800 has margin on both.
Marine Starting Battery vs. Deep Cycle: Get This One Right
This is a starting battery, not a deep cycle. The plates are thin and closely spaced to dump a short, heavy burst of current, which is exactly wrong for slow, sustained loads. Running a trolling motor, a fish finder, or an overnight house load off this battery will shorten its life fast. If that's your application, you want a deep cycle or a dual-purpose battery instead. Call us with your setup and we'll tell you which one you actually need.
Fit and Terminal Position
The MAR-800 measures 12" long by 6.8" wide by 8.875" tall and weighs 49 lbs, with the positive terminal on the left. Measure your battery box and check which side your positive cable comes from before you drive over. A reversed terminal layout is the most common reason a battery that should fit doesn't.
Flooded batteries want a clean, tight connection and a charging system that's doing its job. If your last battery died early, have the alternator and the ground strap looked at while you're replacing it. Boaters out of Mentor Harbor, Fairport, and Grand River put more cycles on a starting battery in a season than most people expect.
