An 8D battery is what you reach for when a Group 31 isn't enough: a truck that has to turn over a big diesel on a cold morning, a standby generator that has to start on the first crank, a piece of equipment that sits for a week and still needs to fire. The Crown 8D-XD is built for that work. Twelve volts, 1400 cold cranking amps, flooded lead acid construction, made in the USA.
The 1400 CCA rating is the number doing the work here. Cold cranking amps measure how much current a battery can push at 0°F for thirty seconds while still holding usable voltage, which is exactly what a diesel starter demands on a Northeast Ohio January morning. The XD is the high-output version of Crown's 8D line. If your engine has been cranking slow, or the starter groans before it catches, the extra cranking amps are what you're paying for.
One thing worth saying up front: this is a starting battery. It is designed to dump a large burst of current and then be recharged by the alternator right away. Running an inverter, a house bank, or accessories off it with the engine shut down will cut its life short. If that's your application, call us and we'll point you to a deep cycle 8D instead.
Group 8D Battery Fit — Check Your Terminal Position First
The 8D case is a standard BCI size, so it drops into any tray built for a group 8D battery: 20.75" long, 11" wide, 8.875" tall. The detail that catches people is terminal position. This one is positive left, meaning the positive post sits on the left side with the terminals facing you. If the battery coming out is positive right, your cables may not reach. Pull the old one, look at it, and if you're not certain, snap a photo and call us before you make the trip. It's a 127 pound battery. Nobody wants to load it twice.
Common applications for this one:
- Class 7 and Class 8 trucks, tractors, and vocational chassis
